How to Avoid the “Shiny Object” Trap in Wealthtech

SEPTEMBER 2026
Wealthtech is evolving quickly. Established platforms are rolling out new capabilities, AI is being embedded into tools firms already use, and vendors are introducing new ways to automate workflows, connect data, and improve the advisor and client experience.

For wealth management firms, that creates real opportunity. It also creates pressure to keep up.

When a new solution or functionality promises to eliminate manual work, improve reporting, or give time back to the team, it can be tempting to start with the technology rather than the problem it is meant to solve.

That is where the shiny object trap begins: when an impressive feature, compelling demo, or industry trend starts driving the decision before the firm has clearly defined the need.

Avoiding that trap does not mean resisting innovation. It means being disciplined enough to make sure the technology is solving the right problem.

Start With the Problem, Not the Product

Technology decisions often begin with a visible pain point. The team is entering the same information in multiple places. Advisors are frustrated with the CRM. Alternative investment data requires too much manual work. Leadership wants to explore how AI can improve efficiency.

But a pain point does not always mean the firm needs another tool.

Before evaluating solutions, firms should identify what is actually creating the friction. Is the issue the technology itself, or is it configuration, data quality, workflow design, adoption, or unclear ownership?

That distinction matters. Sometimes a new solution is the right answer. Other times, the better move is to improve how the technology already in place is being used.

Evaluate the Ecosystem, Not the Feature

Once there is a clear case for new technology, the next question is how it will fit into the broader environment.

How will it interact with core platforms? Where will the data come from? Who will own and maintain it? What integrations or workflow changes will it require? What will advisors and operations teams need to do differently?

Every new system adds something to manage, whether that is another integration, data source, set of permissions, vendor relationship, or process. Without a clear role, new technology can create overlap and add complexity rather than reduce it.

The goal is not to have the fewest systems or the most sophisticated tech stack. It is to make sure each system has a defined purpose and that the value it adds is worth the operational lift required to support it.

AI Makes This Discipline Even More Important

The shiny object conversation has become especially relevant as firms explore artificial intelligence (AI) and automation.

The potential is significant. AI can help accelerate work, surface information, improve productivity, and create entirely new ways for advisors and operations teams to interact with data.

But AI tends to magnify whatever is already there. Automating an inconsistent process does not make it a good process. Connecting AI to unreliable or poorly governed data does not make the information more reliable.

Before asking where AI can be deployed, firms should understand the quality of the data feeding it, the workflows surrounding it, the systems involved, and the controls required to use it responsibly.

The firms best positioned to take advantage of AI will often be the ones that have already done the less exciting work of getting those fundamentals right.

Factor in the Work After the Decision

One of the easiest things to underestimate in a technology decision is everything that happens after the contract is signed. Implementation is not simply turning the system on.

Technology needs to be configured around the firm. Data needs to move correctly. Integrations need to work. Workflows may need to change. Users need training. Responsibilities need to be assigned. New processes need to become part of how the organization operates every day.

And that work does not end at launch. Platforms evolve. Teams change. Firms grow. Vendors release new capabilities. What was configured correctly two years ago may no longer reflect how the business operates today.

That is why adoption and ongoing optimization should be considered part of the technology investment from the beginning.

The Best Tech Stack Is an Intentional One

Innovation will continue to move quickly, and wealth management firms should absolutely be exploring what is possible.

But the firms that benefit most from new technology will not necessarily be the ones that adopt it first.

They will be the ones that know what they are trying to accomplish, understand how their technology and operations work together, and have the discipline to invest where new capabilities can meaningfully improve the business.

If your firm is evaluating new technology or looking for ways to get more from the systems you already have, Ellevate can help assess what will actually improve your operations and where added technology may only create more complexity.
